Although formed relatively recently, Almeria has played in the top league of Spanish football for a number of recent seasons after first winning promotion in 2007.
About UD Almeria
Unión Deportiva Almería was formed as recently as 1989 and after playing in a regional league for three seasons, entered the Tercera (actually the fourth division) in 1992 for just one year, the Segunda B for two seasons and then Seguna for another two seasons.

At that point the club was relegated and remained in 2B four of the next five seasons, with the 1999-2000 season spent in the Tercera.
However, after winning promotion to second tier football in 2002-2003 Almeria was able to do enough to hang on and at the end of the 2006-2007 season finished in second place and earning their place in La Liga for the first time in their short history.
There they remained for the next four seasons before a poor season saw them back in the second division once more. However, after two seasons they once more earned a place in the top division in 2013-2014, although they have struggled at the bottom of the table.
The club’s greatest achievement to date is reaching the Copa del Rey semi-finals in 2010-2011; they were eliminated at this stage of the competition by FC Barcelona who beat them with an aggregate score of 8-0.
Originally named Almería Club de Fútbol, the club changed its name to Unión Deportiva Almería (or UD Almería for short) in 2001.
Almeria plays at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos, a multi-use stadium owned by the town council. As well as being home to Almeria, the stadium is used for athletics and hosted the 2005 Mediterranean Games.
Built in 2004, the stadium is modern and holds 22,000 spectators. However, the athletics tracks means there is a large separation between the pitch and supporters and the club therefore uses additional seating behind the goals to bring crowds closer to the action, while not using seating that is too far away, reducing capacity to 15,000.
