About Villarreal CF
Although the club was founded in 1923 success came to Villarreal CF relatively recently, when they finally made their first division debut during 1998-1999 for a single season. They only entered regional competitions in 1929 and earned promotion to the Tercera in 1956.
Recent & forthcoming FC Barcelona vs Villarreal fixtures
Although making the second division in 1970, they were relegated again after a couple of seasons and spent the 1976-1977 season playing in the regional divisions. After making the Segunda B in ’87-88 they spent one year in the lower division before two successive years of promotion found them playing in the Segunda in 1992.
After promotion to the top tier of Spanish football again for the second time in 2000-2001 Villarreal enjoyed a fair amount of success, ending in third place in the table in 2004-2005 and runners up in 2007-2008 before a catastrophic season in 2011-2012 that saw them relegated again for a season.
However, that period of underperformance proved to be temporary and Villarreal again were promoted to the first division where they remained towards the top of the table.
El Madrigal stadium
Villarreal’s El Madrigal stadium was inaugurated in 1923 and, with a capacity of 22,000, can hold half the town’s population. The stadium was updated in 1952 during which time the pitch was enlarged, with further enlargements and refurbishments taking place for the rest of the century.
Finally in 2005 the stadium underwent further urgent refurbishments to bring it up to date with UEFA requirements after the club qualified directly for the Champions League following its third place finish in the Spanish League during the 2004-2005 season.
