As one of the most successful and highest profile clubs in the world, FC Barcelona has long been an attractive team from many of the world’s best players.
As well as bringing up players through the highly successful youth training program (Messi is just one of the current squad to have been gone through “la masia” as it is known), Barça buys in big name talent when it needs additional firepower, the most recent big example of this being Neymar, who was signed from Brazilian team Santos for €57 million in 2013.
Current FC Barcelona Squad (2013-2014)
Of course it is currently Lionel Messi who is the big draw to the Nou Camp and he consistently delivers world class performances. The other star player of the last decade though was Ronaldinho, who really reached his peak at Barcelona. Although his spark seemed to last just a few seasons and he has been unable to recapture such form at his subsequent clubs, he was a pleasure to watch and produced incredibly exciting football, whether he scored or not.
Barcelona is also reliant on the workhorses such as captain Carles Puyol, who has stated that he intends playing until his is 40, although given the number of knee injuries he has sustained in the last few seasons, that seems unlikely. However, the will is there and he is a favourite with the local fans.
And while this season is likely to be the last for Victor Valdés, as he has consistently stated that he intends to leave FC Barcelona once his contract is up, he has had an incredible run after becoming the regular goalkeeper in the 2003-2004 season.
And don’t forget about Alves, Iniesta, Piqué and other players who have been with the club for many years now and remain firm favourites with the fans. With many of Barcelona’s players in the Spanish national selection, Spain won the 2010 World Cup with a squad that was composed mainly of Barça players, which further added to the club’s prestige.
