⚽🎈🎉🍺Barça knocks out PSG in incredible 6-1 win

March 9, 2017

Three weeks ago Paris Saint-Germain gave FC Barcelona a very bloody nose for Valentine’s Day. Running rings around a lethargic Barça they could have been forgiven for thinking that a 4-0 home win would be enough to take them through to the Champions League quarter-finals. Or, looking it it another way, that it was an insurmountable challenge for the Catalans.

Barcelona has been extremely uneven this season, as they showed that February night in Paris. But last night they had everything to play for and really hit their form. The stadium was buzzing with the anticipation of seeing what they were capable of when their backs were against the wall. And despite a race against the clock towards the end, FC Barcelona pulled out all the stops and did what most commentators thought impossible. Even when the visitors scored, they didn’t give up. And finally two goals in injury time saw them notch up the score to a colossal 6-1 and a place in the next round.

Barcelona came on showing they really meant business, no messing around and it took just three minutes before Luis Suarez scored the opener. The ball hardly seemed to go in at all, although replays showed it was well over the line. A good start early on. But despite dominating possession in PSG’s half and a shambolic defence by the visitors Barcelona just weren’t able to get the ball into the net. That’s the only thing that counts. Finally though Kurzawa attempted to clear a Suarez header right on the line. Instead it ricocheted into his own net and so the first haf ended with Barça two goals ahead.

Five minutes into the break Messi made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after Neymar was brought down. The Catalans were now a goal away of forcing the match to extra time. Hardly ideal, but better than being knocked out.

All that changed just after the hour when Cavani scored one for PSG. That away goal suddenly meant that Barcelona now needed a toal of six goals to stay in the competition. To put it another way, they needed three more in the space of half an hour. And as the clock counted down it was looking increasingly as if even another goal was beyond them. While most of the stadium was subdued in a moody silence, the PSG corner sounded triumphant.

At the end of the match everything turned though. With two minutes remaining on the clock Neymar scored an amazing goal from a free kick. The crowd started to warm up again. Then a minute into injury time Neymar scored from the penalty spot to make it 5-1. That was 5-5 on aggregate but giving PSG the quarter-final place due to their away goal. An amazing effort but just not enough. Finally, five minutes into injury time Sergi Roberto put the ball into the back of PSG’s net and the crowd went wild. Soon after the ref blew the whistle and it was all over. Barcelona really had done it!

1-0 L Suárez (min 3)
2-0 Kurzawa (min 40 og)
3-0 Messi (min 50 pen)
3-1 Cavani (min 62)
4-1 Neymar (min 88)
5-1 Neymar (min 90+1 pen)
6-1 Sergi (min 90+5)

Usually Camp Nou empties fast but last night supporters stayed in their seats to celebrate. It was a truly amazing victory and just shows what the current squad is capable of when they are focused.
