Barcelona assured Group C top spot after win against CelticNovember 24, 2016
FC Barcelona’s Champions League win against Celtic last night combined with Man City’s 1-1 draw against Gladbach mean the Catalans have secured their position at the top of Group C with one match to go. Both of Barça’s goals were scored by Leo Messi.
Celtic were careful not to have a rerun of their 7-0 defeat at Camp Nou in September and came on fighting. The result was few chances for Barça in the early part of the game. However, as the first half ground on Celtic’s energy began to be sapped. Finally, in the twenty-fourth minute, Neymar and Messi teamed up in a fantastic piece of work that ended the deadlock. Barcelona were ahead!
Barcelona created a couple more good chances and during the break Celtic must have been counting their blessings they had conceded just one goal. Celtic started the second half looking strong again and came close to equalising within two minutes of play resuming, but Ter Stegen managed to reach the ball. But Barcelona clinched the match ten minutes in after Luis Suarez was brought down in the Celtic area. Messi kicked the penalty to put Barcelona 2-0 into the lead.
Both teams really wound down after this, with Celtic knowing they would almost certainly exit European football this season. Although Suarez had an opportunity in the closing minutes of the match, there was little more action at either end of the pitch and when the whistle blew the score remained 2-0.
Group C is headed by FC Barcelona on 12, with Man City in second place with 8 points. Gladbach lie in third with 5, leaving Celtic at the bottom on 2.
