PSG decimates BarçaFebruary 15, 2017 Leave your thoughts
Barcelona’s chances of making the quarter-finals of the Champions League took a considerable knock last night after Paris Saint-Germain completely outclassed them in the first leg of the knockout stage of the competition.
One of the themes that has dogged Barcelona this season is their lack consistency. Just when you think they’ve got things together they play a game like this. Instead of looking like one of the best teams in the world with some of the best players, they were, at the very best, second rate. Possession was slightly in their favour, but they were simply unable to do anything useful.
The Catalans were looking uncomfortable and it was little surprise when Di María finally scored the opener in the 18th minute. While that could have spurred Barça on to find their rhythm it did nothing of the sort. In the 40th minute Draxler scored PSG’s second goal and as they continued to apply pressure it looked like it could well be 3-0 before the break.
While that didn’t happen, it wasn’t too long before Di María scored PSG’s third ten minutes into the second half. And by the time of their fourth goal with 19 minutes remaining it was clear Barcelona’s only real hope of silverware this season is the Copa del Rey.
Even in the final minutes that failed to break through and score a single goal that could be vital in this stage of the competition. But in the end the stats speak for themselves. For PSG’s 16 attempts on the Barcelona goal 10 were on target. The Catalans managed 7 shots but only one was on target. They simply weren’t good enough and it’s hard to see Barcelona turning this result around.
1-0 Di María (min 18)
2-0 Draxler (min 40)
3-0 Di María (min 55)
4-0 Cavani (min 71)
