Barça cruises to place in Copa del Rey quarter-finalsJanuary 14, 2016
Barcelona easily made it through to the Copa del Rey quarter finals after a 2-0 away win against RCD Espanyol last night followed their 4-1 home win. Last week’s bad tempered match saw two Espanyol players expelled, while before the match Luis Suarez learnt the appeal against his two match suspension had failed. He picked that up for an incident in the tunnel at the end of the match.
During the match Espanyol supporters unfurled a number of banners aimed at Barça, two specifically at Gerard Pique and his wife, Shakira. However, with the result pretty much sealed last week, Pique was one of the players Luis Enrique opted to rest. Neymar, Iniesta and Busquets were alwso absent.
However, Leo Messi started the match and played the full 90 minutes. Crucially, he assisted Munir to score the opener at the 30 minute mark. Although the home team fought back after that first goal, Barça led at the break thanks to a great save by Ter Stegen.
The second half was a little quiet, but Barcelona had done more than enough already. With the clock counting down to the final whistle, it was just three minutes from the end that Turan and Vidal set up Munir for his second of the night and a place in the quarter-finals.
0-1 Munir (min 31)
