Barça secures Copa del Rey semi-final after nervous win against Basques

January 28, 2016

Barcelona secured a place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals last night after beating Athletic Bilbao 5-2 on aggregate. But despite a comfortable margin by the time the final whistle blew, much of the match was rather more nerve-racking.

The visitors went ahead early in the match, when Iñaki Williams opened the scoring. That meant Athletic needed one more goal to secure a place in the semis. Despite them going out of their way to make it happen the first half ended with Athletic Bilbao ahead with one goal. Uncomfortable for Barça.

That discomfort was shortlived after the break, when Luis Suarez equalised seven minutes into the second half. While that was a tremendous relief, it still wasn’t enough margin though. The last quarter hour saw a number of chances that failed to end in a goal. However Pique’s 80th minute goal meant the job was just about done. All that was left was for Neymar to score Barça’s third at the very last moment.

0-1 Iñaki Williams (min 11)
1-1 Suárez (min 52)
2-1 Piqué (min 80)
3-1 Neymar (min 90)
