Barça wins derby to make Copa del Rey semis

January 26, 2018

Two fist half goals saw FC Barcelona turn around their away defeat by city neighbours RCD Espanyol to qualify for the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

After the team’s first defeat since August last week, it was essential for Barça to pull out all the stops at Camp Nou last night. And in the end a goal from Suarez within the first ten minutes then one from Messi 25 minutes into the match was what it took.

That doesn’t mean there wasn’t any danger from Espanyol, as even with Barça two goals ahead, a single goal from the visitors would have put them through on away goals. That danger came ten minutes from the end when Moreno went down in the box but his appeal for a penalty was dismissed.

New signing Philippe Coutinho came close to scoring and Messi almost scored a second, but maybes could for nothing. Barcelona deserved to win the match by a larger margin but in the end they did enough to make it through to the last four. With Real Madrid knocked out on Wednesday, Barcelona win face either Sevilla, Valencia or Leganes.
