Espanyol sees red(s)January 7, 2016
After Saturday’s disappointing result against Espanyol in the Spanish League, the second city derby in the space of five days saw a convincing victory by Barça in a match that saw Espanyol end the match with just nine players. The match also saw the debut of Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal. Both players joined Barcelona in the summer but were prevented from playing by the club’s ban on new players.
Things didn’t all go Barcelona’s way though, as last night’s match at the Nou Camp saw the visitors go ahead in the eighth minute. However, Messi soon put that right with a 12th minute equaliser towards the end of the first half he put Barcelona into the lead.
Five minutes isto the second half Pique scored Barça’s third goal of the night, assisted by Messi, but as desperation sunk in the visitors started to get dirty. Hernán Pérez received his marching orders after a second yellow card for fouling Jordi Alba, while minutes later Pape Diop was shown a direct red card, apparently for yelling abuse at Suarez. Down to nine men the visitors had no chance of getting back into the game anyway, but another Messi assist helped Neymar to score the last goal of the night and almost certainly secure Barcelona’s place in the next round of the Copa del Rey.
