Valencia completely overwhelmed in Copa del Rey semiFebruary 4, 2016
It’s difficult to know what to write about last night’s Copa del Rey semi-final at the Nou Camp, other to say things didn’t go well for Gary Neville and Valencia. The visitors played terribly from the start and Luis Suarez had soon put the Catalans two goals ahead. And that was after just 11 minutes.
Leo Messi made it 3-0 before the half hour mark, with a fantastic assist from Neymar, making Barcelona’s intentions very clear. But things went from bad to worse for Valencia when Mustafi tripped up Messi in the penalty area during injury time. Even though Neymar missed the spot kick Valencia was now down to 10 men.
It took a quarter of an hour of the second half for Barcelona to score again, when Messi scored his second of the night. And he made it a hat-trick fifteen minutes later to make it 5-0 and effectively ending any remaining hope for Valencia in next week’s return match.
However, Suarez still wasn’t finished. First he made it a hat-trick with six minutes remaining on the clock off an Adriano assist, then scored one more before then end helped by Turan. As if the result of the match wasn’t farcical enough, Cheryshev received standing ovation on his Valencia debut, having just joined on loan from Real Madrid. He was central to Madrid being kicked out of the Copa del Rey because of playing while suspended.
It’s game over for Valencia in the Copa del Rey, and chances are game over for Gary Neville after a shocking performance from the team he has been coaching since December.
