2016 Gamper goes to BarçaAugust 11, 2016
Last night saw FC Barcelona’s first home match in the pre-season annual Gamper Trophy. This year Sampdoria were Barça’s guests, the team Barcelona beat to take the 1992 European Cup at Wembley. Gamper means a party inside Camp Nou as the new look squad was displayed for the first time.
After a pretty lacklustre first quarter hour, Suarez scored the opener off a Messi assist. The the Argentine scored one for himself soon after, but Muriel closed the gap for for Sampdoria almost immediately after. It wasn’t the end of Messi’s night though as he scored a second goal for the night after 34 minutes so that Barcelona went into the break with a 3-1 advantage.
While Lucas Digne made the starting lineup Barça’s other new signings came on after the break when Samper, Denis Suárez, Umtiti and André Gomes all made their Camp Nou debuts. While the second half was much less lively, Budimir did throw Barcelona’s win into doubt when he scored half an hour in. In the end though it wasn’t enough and it was Barcelona that won the trophy.
Sunday sees Barça’s first real test when they play the away leg of the Spanish Supercup against Sevilla.
