3-0 win against Athletic

Barcelona won another valuable three points on Saturday afternoon at the Nou Camp again Athletic Bilbao. Alcacer, starting in place of Luis Suarez who was being rested, made his mark eighteen minutes into the match when he scored the opener off a Neymar cross after he beat the Athletic defence.

Ter Stegan was called into action twice within the space of a few minutes either side of 30 minutes; first was Raul García and then Iñaki Williams soon after.

Messi scored five minutes before the break when from a free kick. Headed directly for goalie Gorka Iraizoz, an apparent mix-up between the goalkeeper and Raul Garcia saw Iraizoz surprised. Although he got his hands to the ball it ricocheted down and bounced into the net. The first half ended with Barça two goals ahead.

Aleix Vidal scored Barcelona’s third of the afternoon twenty minutes into the second half. After beating Athletic defence in midfield he took a fairly leisurely run a the goal and beat the keeper to make it 3-0.

The weekend leaves Barcelona just one point adrift of Real Madrid now. However, that disguises the whole story as Madrid now have two games in hand as their Sunday night match against Celta Vigo was postponed due to wind damage to Celta’s stadium rendering it unsafe. And Madrid still need to catch up with their match against Valencia postponed from December because of the Club World Cup. With that in mind this is how the Spanish League now stands:
