6-1 win against Sporting takes Barça to top of table

March 2, 2017

Last night saw a big win for Barcelona that saw them overtake Real Madrid at the head of table. But perhaps exactly because of that, Luis Enrique stunned the media by announcing he would step down as Barça’s coach when his contract expires in June.

Watch the goals

Messi scored the opener off a ninth minute header, with Luis Suarez awarded the second off a Neymar assist two minutes later. Defender Juan Rodriguez failed to clear the ball and looks like he may have helped with that goal. It didn’t all goes Barcelona’s way though, with Castro scoring off a rebound after Sergio found the post two minutes later. However, minutes later Suarez scored a fantastic shot to make it 3-1. And that’s how the score ended going into the break.

It took four minutes of the second half for Messi to assist Alcácer, who had come on in place of Suarez. And five minutes after the hour Neymar scored Barcelona’s fifth of the night it 5-1 from a free kick just outside the penalty area. The Sporting goalie got his hands to the ball but failed to stop it and it flew over the line. The final goal of the night was score by Rakitic three minutes from the end and all in all a great result.

1-0 Messi (min 9)
2-0 Luis Suárez (min 11)
2-1 Castro (min 21)
3-1 Luis Suárez (min 27)
4-1 Alcácer (min 49)
5-1 Neymar (min 65)
6-1 Rakitic (min 87)

With Real Madrid clawing back a draw against Las Palmas later in the evening, Barcelona are now at the top of the table. The Catalans’ arch-rivals were down 3-1 until the very end of the game. Then they scored twice is the space of a few minutes for a 3-3 draw and one point. Madrid still have a game in hand but at least it feels like Barça now have a fighting chance of taking the league title.
