Atletico holds Barça to a draw at Camp Nou

September 22, 2016

Last night saw Barcelona hold Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw that saw Leo Messi limp off just before the hour mark. Busquets was also substituted due to injury early in the second half.

With a big turnout for the match, Barcelona spent much of the first half taking things calmly while looking for opportunities. However, Atletico’s rock solid defence meant they were unable to make it count until four minutes before the end of the first half when Iniesta played the ball to Rakitic, who was racing into the area. He headed into Atletico’s net and going into the break the Catalans were ahead!

The second half saw André Gomes come on to replace an injured Sergei Busquets. A handful of minutes later Leo Messi also looked to be in pain, causing him to be replaced by Arda Turan just before the hour.

Atletico Madrid also made some changes right on 60 minutes, with Fernando Torres and Angel Correa coming on in place of Saúl Ñíguez and Kevin Gameiro. They made an immediate difference to the game when Torres set up Correa to equalise in the 61st minute.

Although Neymar, Suarez, Pique, Alba, Rakitic and Iniesta all made attempts on the goal in the last half hour, none was able to finish the job. When the final whistle blew each team had one goal apiece, hardly a disaster against a team like Atletico, but a missed opportunity to close the gap with Real Madrid.

1-0 Rakitic (min 41)
1-1 Correa (61)

With Real Madrid also drawing last night Barcelona remains three points behind the league leaders. However, Sevilla has now taken the number two spot after winning against local rival Betis. The worst news really is that Messi is expected to be out of action for the next three weeks. Anyway, the table as it stands this morning is as follows:
