Barça beats Atletico to win Spanish League titleMay 18, 2015
Last night Barcelona took the Spanish League title after a 1-0 win against previous title holder Atletico Madrid. Going into this weekend Barça needed to win just one of their two remaining games and in the end they managed to do just that. Ironically Atletico won last year’s title after a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp so this was a reverse of fortunes.
With Suarez injured Luis Enrique fielded Pedro to complete the strike team and early the hosts were looking like they were on form, forcing Claudio Bravo to make a couple of good saves but Barcelona soon found their rhythm. Soon the Catalans were having a go at the Atletico goal again and again, but without success and what looked like a penalty for Alves half an hour in was given as a free kick outside the box; Messi hit the bar.
It wasn’t until the second half that Barcelona’s prayers were answered when Pedro and Messi did some startling footwork for the Argentine player inside the Atletico area which resulted in a goal by Messi 20 minutes into the second half. A single goal was all they needed, but they needed to make it stick. As the clock counted down and with four minutes injury time added, it was with a huge sense of relief when the final whistle blew. Three points to Barcelona and another La Liga title; players and Barça fans celebrated the successful end of another campaign.
