Barça dominate Deportivo ahead of Man City clashOctober 17, 2016
After a break in the league for international duties it was the turn of Deportivo la Coruña to visit Camp Nou on Saturday evening. Early on in the match Neymar had a couple of good opportunities that came to nothing. But after Rafinha scored the opener from a Luis Suarez assist 21 minutes into the first half it was all plain sailing for the Catalans.
Barcelona continued to pressurise, completely dominating possession. And so it was almost inevitable that a second goal came fifteen minutes later. The Depor keeper deflected a header from Pique only to see Rafinha finish the job. However the job wasn’t yet done for FC Barcelona and Luis Suárez scored just before the break off an assist by Neymar.
Probably with Wednesday’s Champions League class against Man City in mind and with the match well under control, Luis Enrique substituted Luis Suárez for Paco Alcácer in the second half. But one of the biggest cheers of the night was five minutes before the hour mark, when Messi came on in place of Busquets. The Argentine superstar had been out of action for more than three weeks with a groin strain and so it was great to have him back.
It didn’t take Messi long to make his mark either. Three minutes later Messi put the ball into the top left corner to make it 4-0. Any chance that Deportivo might have wished for to get back into the game was dashed in the 65th minute when Laure was sent off for fouling Neymar. Barça continued to push, but they knew the job was done and so minutes later off came Rafinha in favour of Denis Suárez.
It was a great result ahead of Pep Guardiola’s return to Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Rafinha (min 21)
Rafinha (min 36)
Suárez (min 43)
Messi (min 58)
The result leaves Barcelona lying fourth in the league table, just two points behind Atletico and Real Madrid and trailing Sevilla by a single point.
