Barça stages comeback against Eibar but Madrid wins the league

May 22, 2017

The last match of the season saw FC Barcelona needing to beat Eibar to secure three points while hoping for Malaga to defeat Madrid. And as Luis Enrique’s last league match at Barça, even if his team didn’t win the league, he would have wanted to finish in style.

However, Eibar shocked Camp Nou when Inui scored the opener after just seven minutes. And while Barcelona dominated possession they just weren’t able to finish. The first half ended with Eibar a goal ahead. And that’s how things continued until just after the hour. Unfortunately it was Inui again for Eibar who put the visitors two goals up. Things just weren’t going Barcelona’s way.

And then their luck changed. Junca scored an own goal soon after and inside the last 20 minutes Luis Suarez equalised. And then with a quarter of an hour to go Ander Capa brought down Neymar in the area. The ref showed him his second yellow of the night and Messi scored from the spot. Barcelona were ahead!

Even with 10 men Eibar didn’t let Barcelona do more until two minutes into injury time. Suarez made an attempt at the goal off a Messi header that was saved, only to see the Argentine finish the move off the rebound.

0-1 Inui (min 7)
0-2 Inui (min 61)
1-2 Juncà (min 63)
2-2 Suárez (min 73)
3-2 Messi (min 75)
4-2 Messi (min 90+2)

Despite winning the match, it wasn’t enough. Real Madrid beat Malaga 2-0 to remain three points ahead of the Catalans and take the league title. Next weekend sees Barcelona face Alaves in the Copa del Rey. Here’s how the league stands at the end of the season:
