Barça starts 2016 with draw in local derbyJanuary 3, 2016
In stark contrast to the way they ended 2015, FC Barcelona started the new year with disappointment when their trip across town saw a goalless draw in the city derby on Saturday.
Although the first half saw Barça dominate possession, the home side went all out to make life difficult for Barça all the same. The Espanyol defence allowed few clear chances at the goal and in the end the keeper was forced to make just two saves thorughout the match, while Leo Messi and Luis Suarez both hit the woodwork.
While the first half saw some danger created by Espanyol, the second half saw them content to focus on defending and in the end this was enough to prevent Barcelona from taking the three points on the table. The result was frustrating for Barça as the Catalans were drawing on points with Atletico Madrid at the top of the table. The Madrilians scraped a 1-0 win agaoinst Levante later on Saturday, allowing them to take the top spot and the opportunity to close in on Sunday night.
