Barcelona beats Betis in first league match of 2017/2018

August 21, 2017

Two first half goals saw FC Barcelona win their first league match of the season against Betis. The match took place just days after the city was left reeling following terror attacks in the Ramblas and south of the city in Cambrils.

Prior to kickoff the two teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of the dead and injured. And rather than the player’s name on the back, each Barça player’s shirt simply read “Barcelona”.

The first goal was an own goal 36 minutes into the first half when Tosca deflected the ball into his own net. Sergi Roberto scored the second minutes later.

You can read full match reports on the websites of BBC Sport and FC Barcelona.

1-0 Tosca (min 36)
2-0 Sergi (min 39)

Although it doesn’t really count for much at this stage, the weekend leaves Barcelona in second place in the league after Real Madrid scored 3 against Deportivo. There’s a while to go though before the table actually means anything.
