Barcelona cruise to victory against Las PalmasJanuary 16, 2017
Barcelona played a solid match on Saturday despite the absence of three key players. Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Neymar were all rested ahead of Barça’s Copa del Rey matches this week and next.
There were a handful of good chances in the first few minutes if the game, but it was Luis Suarez who scored the opener just shy of the quarter hour, assisted by André Gomes. Soon after Las Palmas had a go at the Barça goal only to see the ball go wide, but really the pressure was on them. Messi had several chances on the goal but each time failed to score and when the half time whistle came Barcelona was just one goal ahead.
It was a different question in the second half though, with Messi adding his name to the score sheet seven minutes after the restart. Fans only had to wait five minutes longer before Suarez scored again of a Rafinha assist to make it 3-0. And then Arda Turan scored three minutes later for Barcelona’s fourth. If the game wasn’t already decided before, it was now and with a full half hour still to go.
With ten minutes to go Aleix Vidal scored Barcelona’s fifth goal of the night, assisted by Alcácer. All in all a very comfortable win and with Copa del Rey fixtures this week and next.
1-0 Suárez (min 14)
2-0 Messi (min 52)
3-0 Suárez (min 57)
4-0 Turan (min 59)
5-0 Vidal (min 80)
This weekend’s results saw Real Madrid’s lead cut by second place Sevilla. A single point separates Madrid and Sevilla and there are just two points between Madrid and Barça. However Madrid have a match in hand due to their participation in the Club World Cup and still have to face Valencia. There is still no date for that match set.
