Barcelona derby goes to FCBMay 1, 2017
Saturday night saw FC Barcelona travel to Cornella to play local rivals Espanyol. The Barcelona derby can go either way and in the first half the visitors definitely were not at their best despite high possession. But they knew they had to win to keep the dream of the league title alive.
Neymar was back after his three match suspension, but even with the full strength trident back in play Barcelona failed to live up to their last couple of games. The match remained goalless at the break, although the squad stepped up to the challenge in the second half.
Five minutes after play resumed some sloppy footwork by the Espanyol defence saw Luis Suarez gifted a goal. Barcelona’s second came within a quarter of an hour of full time when Messi charged forward with the ball and passed the ball to Rakitic to finish the job. Suarez scored his second of the night with three minutes of full time remaining, again from some sloppy footwork by Espanyol.
0-1 Suárez (min 50)
0-2 Rakitic (min 76)
0-3 Suárez (min 87)
With Real Madrid winning their match against Valencia earlier in the afternoon both sides are level on points, with Barcelona sitting at the head of the table. Madrid still have a game in hand though and as the Catalans work hard to win their remaining matches they need their rivals to lose one of theirs.
