Barcelona dominates second half to win clasicoDecember 24, 2017
Any hope that Real Madrid could close the gap with FC Barcelona was extinguished on Saturday afternoon with three second half goals from the Catalans.
With possession marginally in favour of Barça, after the break the squad clearly showed which was the better side. The hosts had a number if good opportunities with both Benzema and Ronaldo failing to finish. The latter put the ball into the net right at the start but it was disallowed for offside.
It wasn’t long after the restart when Rakitic and Roberto created an opportunity for Luis Suarez, who finished the move to out Barcelona ahead. Just after the hour Carvajal was sent off for handling the ball in the area and Messi made the penalty count. Down to ten men Madrid had little chance to get back into the game. All the same Barça weren’t yet finished and Vidal made it three in injury time.
0-1 Suárez (min 54)
0-2 Messi (min 64)
0-3 Vidal (min 90+3)
The weekend leaves Barcelona with a very comfortable lead at the top of the table as they head into the Christmas break. The Catalans are nine points ahead of Atletico Madrid, their nearest rival, and a colosal 14 clear of Real Madrid in fourth. Remember that Madrid have played one match fewer because of the Club World Cup. But even assigning them three more points they are 11 points adrift of Barça.
