Barcelona scrapes win against Athletic

February 21, 2011

Athletic Bilbao are never a walkover and despite beating them 3-1 back in September in the first leg of the league, Barça also has two draws against Athletic this season in the Copa del Rey giving them, perhaps, something to prove.

David Villa quickly opened up the scoring for Barcelona with a fourth minute goal. However, despite the team going full out to attack the Athletic goal they failed to put it home. Meanwhile, Pinto – on in place of Valdes – proved his worth with a great save in the 36th minute.

After the half time break Athletic came on to attack; within five minutes the Basques fired from the penalty spot for an equaliser. Barça kept up the pressure and came close to scoring. However, it wasn’t until the 77th minute that Messi scored Barça’s second from an Alves cross.

Barcelona kept hold of three points and remain five points clear of Real Madrid.

1-0 Villa (min 4)
1-1 Iraola (min 50)
2-1 Messi (min 77)
