Barcelona triumphs in head to head against AtleticoFebruary 1, 2016
With both teams tying on points at the top of the table, Saturday’s match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid was always going to be a hard fought battle. Early on things went badly, with the Catalans conceding a goal after 10 minutes and the players appeared to find it difficult to get into the game from the start.
By the 25 minute mark Atletico had picked up two yellow cards in the space of a minute. Godin was shown a yellow for a foul on Suarez, followed immediately after by a card for Gabi for fouling Rakitik, as the discipline of the visitors started to fray. And then, just before the half hour mark, Leo Messi equalised off a Jordi Alba assist. Eight minutes Dani Alves assisted Suarez to put Barcelona into the lead.
That seems to have been a triggering point for Atletico, whose discipline had already been breaking down and soon after Juanfran was booked for fouling Neymar. And then, with a minute remaining of the first half, Filipe Luis was shown a red after kicking Messi in the knee.
Immediately after the break both sides made efforts that were thwarted, but 20 minutes into the second half any hope that remained for the visitors was snuffed out. Godin was shown a second yellow after taking out Suarez, leaving Atletico with nine men for remaining 25 minutes. Barcelona didn’t manage to capitalise on their advantage and despite a couple of good efforts the match ended in a 2-1 win.
0-1 Koke (min 9)
