Big win against Sporting

September 26, 2016

After Wednesday’s draw against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona played away at Sporting Gijon on Saturday. While the first half saw Barcelona go ahead by two goals, the last ten minutes against a ten man Sporting saw the Catalans score three more goals to end 5-0 ahead.

Things took a little while to settle down for Barça, with the squad hardly playing their best football. The hosts were awarded a free kick at the twenty minute mark after Ter Stegen handled the ball out of the area, but it came to nothing.

Andre Gomes made a couple of fruitless attempts on the goal before Suarez finally scored the opener off an assist by Ada Turan just before the half hour. Minutes later Sergi Roberto set Barcelona’s second goal for Rafinha, who made the starting lineup in place of the injured Messi.

Sporting came back on after the break with renewed vigor. However, as much as they would have liked to get back into the game the team was unable. Finally, with a quarter of an hour remaining, Alberto Lora picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Sergi Roberto. The home side had no hope while Neymar added to Barcelona’s goal tally and minutes later Sergi Roberto assisted Arda to make it 4-0.

Finally, Denis Suarez, brought on in place of Busquets, set up Neymar’s second goal of the afternoon to end the match 5-0 ahead.

0-1 Suárez (min 29)
0-2 Rafinha (min 32)
0-3 Neymar (min 81)
0-4 Arda (min 85)
0-5 Neymar (min 88)

Barcelona is back in second place in the table after Sevilla were beaten by Athletic Bilbao and dropped back to six, while Real Madrid is a single point ahead after drawing against Las Palmas.
