Comfortable win against EspanyolDecember 19, 2016
Barcelona secured a comfortable home victory last night when RCD Espanyol crossed town for the city derby. Suarez scored two, with Alba and Messi adding one each. López Silva scored Espanyol’s only goal of the evening.
The match got off to a sluggish start with neither team looking particularly inspired, although Messi came close to scoring after seven minutes when the Barcelona trident got to work. However when Luis Suarez scored the opener 18 minutes into the first half off an assist by Andres Iniesta, Barcelona started to find their rhythm and looked much more in control than early in the half.
Towards the end of the first half hour Suarez and Neymar got together to set up Messi only to see his shot blocked and so they went into the break just one goal ahead. The second half saw Barça turn up the heat with both Messi and Suarez making attempts on the goal within the first five minutes after play resumed.
Finally their patience paid off. After some pure Messi magic that failed to result in a goal, Suarez struck to make it 2-0. Immediately afterwards Messi again went out on the attack again on all cylinders. It was up to Jordi Alba to finish the move though and make it 3-0. With less than twenty minutes of the match remaining the job was done.
Eleven minutes later López Silva scored one for the visitors but as the clock ticked down Messi was looking to find the score sheet himself. Finally Luis Suarez set him up to score in injury time and this time the Argentine player made it count.
1-0 Suárez (min 18)
2-0 Suárez (min 67)
3-0 Alba (min 68)
3-1 López Silva (min 79)
4-1 Messi (min 90)
This weekend allowed Barça to close the gap with Madrid, who were in Japan playing in the Club World Cup. For the time being Barcelona is three points behind their arch-rival but have Sevilla breathing down their necks. The next league match takes place on 8th January against Villarreal.

Barcelona play Hercules on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey. They need to do a little better than they did in the away leg, where they could only manage a 1-1 draw. Hopefully Barcelona’s poor spell is now in the past and they’ll progress to the next round easily.
