Defeated by CeltaOctober 3, 2016
Yesterday evening saw Barcelona go into their match against Celta Vigo knowing they could be at the top of the table by the end of the night. Real Madrid drew against Eibar on Sunday afternoon and a win for Barça would place them a point ahead of their arch-rivals. But Celta is the club managed by Luis Enrique before he took over at FC Barcelona and his former club made sure a different story played out.
Early on in the match Barcelona looked strong, but it was the hosts who went ahead when Sisto scored the opener off an assist by Aspas. Aspas beat Pique to score one of his own just after the first half hour. And then two minutes later Celta were 3-0 ahead after Mathieu failed to clear the ball. Sickeningly it instead went into his own net.
Changes were clearly needed and so on came Iniesta after the break in place of Rafinha. The veteran midfielder made his mark just before the hour when Pique headed his cross into the Celta net. Minutes later Neymar scored Barcelona’s second goal from the penalty spot. But Ter Stegen made it easy for Pablo Hernández to score Celta’s fourth goal when his pass intended for Jordi Alba hit the charging Pablo Hernández in the face and rebounded into the goal.
Ten minutes later, with three minutes remaining, Pique scored his second but despite the players going all out to try and level the score there was just too much to do. The result is disappointing and shows how much Barcelona replies on Leo Messi.
1-0 Pione Sisto (min 22)
2-0 Iago Aspas (min 31)
3-0 Mathieu (min 33)
3-1 Piqué (min 58)
3-2 Neymar (min 64)
4-2 Pablo Hernández (min 77)
4-3 Piqué (min 87)
With Real Madrid drawing and Barcelona losing, the table now looks like this:
|13||Deportivo La Coruna||7||2||2||3||5||6||8|
