One thing Barcelona can’t be accused of this season is consistency. After their stunning turnaround in the Champions League last week fans might have been forgiven for thinking Barça had turned the corner this season. And after a victory like that may you’d think they’d have received a bit of a confidence boost.
However, it just didn’t pan out that way on Sunday afternoon, when they faced Deportivo la Coruña at the Riazor stadium. Going a goal down five minutes from the break, Suarez quickly equalised at the start of the second half. But rather than score a second and put the Catalans ahead Bergantiños scored for the home team just before the last quarter hour. There was time to turn the match around still – Barcelona amply proved that on Wednesday – but on Sunday it was all too much.
Granted, the squad was missing Neymar because of leg pain and Rafinha is suffering from gastroenteritis. Wednesday almost certainly took a lot out of them too. But with Madrid trailing them by a point going into the weekend they needed to do more. And with Deportivo near the relegation zone this was a match Barcelona should have had in the bag.
1-0 Joselu (min 40)
1-1 Suárez (min 46)
2-1 Bergantiños (min 74)
With Madrid winning their match against Betis later in the evening Barcelona slipped into second place in the league. Real Madrid are two points ahead and with a game in hand, while Sevilla lie three points behind.
