Draw against dominent Real Sociedad

November 28, 2016

Sunday night saw Barcelona play a tough match against Real Sociedad that ended in a draw. After going a goal down early in the second half, Messi equalised for the Catalans just ahead of the hour to end the match with a goal apiece.

The game started fast and furious, with the hosts troubling Barcelona throughout. In fact the match was notable for being the first this season in which Barcelona were clearly outplayed, with possession in favour of the home side.

The Anoeta is a stadium that Barcelona has struggled with in recent seasons and, amazingly, this the eighth successive match they have failed to win there. That last happened in 2007. On the bright side, it match marked the end of Barça’s four match losing streak at Anoeta.

Fast and furious the first half might have been, but all the same neither team had scored by the break.

Willian José da Silva scored the opener eight minutes into the second half after reaching the ball on the rebound with his head. However, that lead lasted just six minutes before Neymar beat the Real Sociedad defence then found Messi, who equalised.

Fifteen minutes from the end Juanmi put the ball into the Barça goal after Vela’s shot rebounded off the crossbar. However, the goal was disallowed after the linesman ruled Juanmi offside. Replays show that was almost certainly a wrong call..

Both teams continued to push and both came close to scoring again, but in the end Barcelona should feel lucky to have secured a draw. It’s not the result they were looking for and shows they are currently a long way from their best. But there is still time for the club to up their game and close the gap with Madrid.

1-0 Willian José (min 53)
1-1 Messi (min 59)

After this weekend Barcelona remain in second place in the league. Sevilla lie in third, also on 27 points. Barça are now six points behind Real Madrid, who they face at Camp Nou next Saturday. Before that, on Wednesday, Barcelona plays Hercules in the Copa del Rey.
