Draw at the Mestalla after Messi goal disallowedNovember 27, 2017 Leave your thoughts
With Valencia shadowing Barça at the top of the league, Sunday night’s match at the Mestalla was important. A win for Valencia would put them within a point of Barcelona as well as break their unbeaten streak.
The Catalans controlled possession in their normal style and thirty minutes into the match it looked like they’d gone ahead. Leo Messi shot from just outside the box off a Luis Suarez to put the ball just over the line. The ref didn’t give the goal despite clear photographic evidence that it should have been allowed. Barça’s players looked astounded and Valencia almost made the most of that confusion.
Remember that the Spanish football association decided not to implement goal-line technology because of the cost to clubs. Will they rethink that decision? We’ll see.
In the end the opener was scored by Rodrigo for Valencia right on the hour. However the Catalans continued working away and finally, with eight minutes remaining on the clock, Alba equalised. Valencia continued to look for another goal too but in the end FC Barcelona’s run of matches undefeated stands.
1-0 Rodrigo (min 60)
1-1 Alba (min 82)
The draw means the gap between the two clubs at the top of the league table remains the same. However Real Madrid and Atletico close the gap so they are now both eight points behind Barça.
