Espanyol holds Barcelona to a draw in rain soaked Derby

February 5, 2018

Sunday saw heavy rain over much of Catalonia, including the stadium of Barça’s local rival Espanyol for the city derby. Leo Messi must have been grateful for starting on the bench, only coming on the the last half an hour of play.

Barcelona played with their usual dominance but it wasn’t until twenty minutes into the match that the first real chance came when Coutinho hit the bar from outside the box. When a goal finally came it was for the hosts, with Moreno heading the ball into the Barcelona net. Barça continued pushing though and in the end Pique equalised off a Messi free kick.

The game marks Barça’s 22nd league match without a loss, passing the previous record under Pep Guardiola.

1-0 Moreno (min 66)
1-1 Piqué (min 82)

While Real Madrid were held to a draw, Atletico beat Valencia to close the gap by two points at the top of the table. They are now nine points behind Barcelona, which is still a more than comfortable margin.
