Hard fought clasico ends in 2-1 win for BarçaMarch 23, 2015
This highly anticipated clasico arrived with FC Barcelona just one point ahead of Real Madrid and followed Barça’s qualification for the Champions League quarter-final stage after beating Man City on Wednesday. The match got off to an intense start with both sides eager to score the opener but it was Mathieu who scored 18 minutes in to put the Catalans ahead off a Messi free kick.
With Barcelona ahead there was no room for complacency by either side and the relentless pace continued end-to-end, with Madrid looking extremely dangerous throughout. At the half hour mark Neymar looked as if he’d open up the lead for Barça but despite being on top of the goal somehow failed to to react and after Cristiano Ronaldo put the ball into the Barcelona net to draw level.
Madrid was starting to run rinds around Barcelona, lacking of their the customary domination of possession and looked to have gone ahead when Bale put the ball into the net, only for Ronaldo to be ruled offside, but the onslaught continued even after the break. Nine minutes into the second half though and things came together for Barça when Alves passed to Suarez, who put the ball home. Barcelona were back in the lead!
As the end drew near the visitors seemed to run out of steam as Barcelona controlled the match and Madrid’s goal came under repeated attack. Although nothing more come of this, it shut down Madrid’s opportunities to get back into the match and when the final whistle went after 3 minutes of injury time the Catalans had three points in the bag.
1-0 Mathieu (min 18)
1-1 Ronaldo (min 30)
2-1 Suárez (min 54)
