Last minute penalty secures win against LeganesFebruary 20, 2017
Two goals by Leo Messi saw Barcelona take three points against Leganes last night but it was far from plain sailing. Putting the Catalans ahead early on, the visitors equalised with 20 minutes of the match remaing. But just when it looked as if the match would end in a tie a penalty was awarded against Leganes. Messi’s 90th minute spot kick made it a win.
This is the first season Leganes have played in the top division of Spanish football, but they were definitely playing as if they mean to stay there. Despite Messi’s early goal of an assist by Suarez the Barça trident were unable to do more thanks to Leganes’ tight defence. And at the other end Ter Stegen was made to work for his salary, making a number of great saves that could have produced a very different result.
The visitors were working hard to score and nearly 25 minutes into the second half their time finally came. When Guerrero tackled Sergei Roberto he stumbled and fell. Machis quickly passed López whose low shot seemed to go through Ter Stegen’s legs.
But when Neymar was brought down in the area the ref immediately awarded a penalty. Messi kicked the ball into the top left corner of the net right at the 90th minute and with just stoppage time remaining the visitors were unable to do any more. All in all this was Barcelona again far from their best and scraping a win against a much lesser team.
1-0 Messi (min 4)
1-1 López (min 71)
2-1 Messi (min 90)
The weekend leaves FC Barcelona still chasing Real Madrid who are one point ahead. That doesn’t tell the whole story though as Madrid have two games in hand thanks to their participation in the Club World Cup in December and a recent match postponed due to safety concerns over bad weather. The first of those outstanding matches will be played against Valencia on Wednesday but with Valencia in woeful form it seems unlikely that they will help Barcelona.
