Late Messi goal seals win against Alaves

January 29, 2018

Two goals inside the last twenty minutes of play saw Barcelona snatch a win after going a goal down to Alaves midway through the first half. The match was Philippe Coutinho’s first for Barça after joining the club earlier in the month from Liverpool.

While Barcelona dominated possession, the visitors took the Barça defence by surprise 23 minutes in when John Guidetti ran from the halfway line to beat Ter Stegan. The visitors were ahead.

Although Barcelona had several good chances, Alaves also came close to scoring a second goal. In the end it wasn’t until the 72nd minute that Luis Suarez equalised. Messi scored with six minutes still on the clock to seal three points for the Catalans.

0-1 Guidetti (min 23)
1-1 Suárez (min 72)
2-1 Messi (min 84)

The result means FC Barcelona maintains their 11 point advantage over Atletico Madrid and leaves Real Madrid trailing by 19 points in fourth.
