Madrid scrapes last minute clasico drawDecember 5, 2016
Saturday saw Real Madrid visit Camp Nou for the first clasico of the season. With Barcelona’s bitterest rival six points ahead in the league it was time for the Catalans to go all out and close the gap. And while they came close to doing exactly that, in the end they had to make do with a draw.
The match was rather scrappy and Barcelona and long way from their best, lacking the fluidity that makes them a joy to watch. Despite a slight possession advantage Barcelona it was the visitors who created more chances but by the end of the first half neither side had scored.
The second half was a different proposition entirely, with Barcelona looking much more comfortable than before. The opener came eight minutes after the break after a flurry of activity ended with Suarez heading a Neymar cross into Madrid’s net.
This changed the balance of the game, with Barcelona looking more confident. That was boosted at the hour mark when Iniesta came on in place of Rakitic, after more than a month off through injury. The next quarter hour or so saw a number of attempts on the Madrid goal, although they came to nothing.
And then Madrid started to wake up again in the closing minutes of the match. Ramos and Ronaldo both failed to score with their heads, but it was a close run thing. Then right in the ninetieth minute Ramos reached the Barcelona net with his head to equalise. It was a devastating blow, stunning the fans in the stadium. Despite five minutes of injury time Barça were unable to score again. In the end the only consolation was that the gap with Madrid didn’t widen further.
1-0 Suárez (min 53)
1-1 Ramos (min 90)
Despite remaining six points behind Real Madrid, Barcelona did at least move ahead of Sevilla, who were defeated by Granada this weekend. Tuesday sees Barcelona face Monchengladbach, while on Saturday they travel to Osasuna.
