Messi claws back point against VillarrealJanuary 9, 2017 Leave your thoughts
A ninetieth minute goal by Leo Messi salvaged a point for FC Barcelona on Sunday night but the club’s first league match of 2017 was hardly what they had hoped for. Perhaps with the weight of expectation on him Suarez failed to score, wasting several chances to reach one hundred goals for the Catalans. Neymar also failed to capitalise on his chances and overall this was Barcelona a long way from their best.
Sansone put Villarreal ahead with an opener early in the second half and in the dying minutes of the match it looked as though the home side were going to beat Barça. Right on ninety minutes though things changed when Messi scored from a free kick.
Four minutes into injury time Villarreal went down to ten men after Jaume Costa was shown a second yellow card, but with a minute remaining there was just too little time to score a second. Despite the disappointing result Barcelona will be relieved that the result wasn’t worse.
1-0 Sansone (min 49)
1-1 Messi (min 90)
Barcelona slipped into third place in the league this weekend, now five points behind Real Madrid (who have a game in hand) and one behind Sevilla.
