Messi injury mars win against Las PalmasSeptember 28, 2015
After the disappointing result against Celta on Wednesday, Barcelona was looking to a return to form on Saturday afternoon. Then they played host to la liga newbies Las Palmas, back in the top tier of Spanish football for the first time since 2001-2002. Although the Catalans secured an important three points, it was not without cost.
Sustaining a knee injury just three minutes in, Leo Messi retired from the game soon after and was later diagnosed with a torn knee ligament. The injury is expected to see him out of action for up to eight weeks. Munir came on in the Argentine’s place, and was instrumental in both goals. After Munir passed the ball to Roberto 25 minutes in, Suarez headed in the resulting cross to put Barça ahead.
Ten minutes into the second half Munir fed Suarez the ball, who put it home to increase Barcelona’s lead. But when Suarez was brought down in the area, Neymar shot the ball clean over the bar. Really he seemed off colour throughout the match. But two goals ahead and the clock ticking down, Barcelona could afford Las Palmas to claw one back. It came in the closing minutes when a Viera shot deflected off Pique and past Ter Stegen into the net.
1-0 Suárez (min 24)
2-0 Suárez (min 54)
2-1 Viera (min 88)
