Messi’s 500th goal fails to see off ValenciaApril 18, 2016
Here we go again. It’s Monday morning and Barcelona again failed to deliver. Just a handful of days ago I was convinced the league title was in the bag. And now, after three losses straight in la liga, Barcelona is heading the table thanks only to goal difference. As usual the Catalans dominated possession and had a number of good opportunities on the Valencia goal. All the same it wasn’t enough.
The only positive was that Messi got back on the score sheet after failing to score since Barça knocked Arsenal out of Champions League on 17th March. That’s an entire calendar month without scoring for Barça… but he did finally reach his 500th career goal. Barcelona went behind after 25 minutes when Siqueira’s shot struck Rakitic then into the goal. And just before the break Santi Mina scored the visitors’ second of the night in injury time.
The second half saw Barça looking determined the turn the match around. The pressure paid off at the hour mark when Messi broke his goal drought off an assist by Alba. But although Rakitic, Neymar and Pique came close, they were unable to finish the job and when the final whistle blew Barcelona had lost yet again.
It’s amazing that after such a long unbeaten run that Barcelona is now floundering. It’s almost like the squad has lost its belief that the team was unbeatable and perhaps what they need to focus on right now is the players’ psychology.
0-1 Rakitic (min 25)
0-2 Santi Mina (min 45)
1-2 Messi (min 60)
