Missed opportunity in defeat by MalagaApril 9, 2017
Barcelona went onto the pitch on Saturday evening with the knowledge that Real Madrid had drawn against Atletico earlier and they had the chance to level on points. However, that knowledge seems to have had little effect on the team. Instead they were lacklustre and lacking inspiration.
Sandro Ramirez scored the opener for Malaga after 32 minutes, while the Catalans hardly seemed to bother the home defence at all. And that’s how the score stood going into the break. In the second half Neymar received his marching orders for a second yellow card five minutes after the hour, tipping the balance in Malaga’s favour.
Adalberto Peñaranda scored a second for Malaga with twenty minutes to go only to see it ruled offside. Replays suggest a bad call from the ref. Finally Rodríguez scored right at the last minute to make it 2-0 and put even the prospect of a draw out of reach of Barcelona.
1-0 Ramírez (min 32)
2-0 Rodríguez (min 90)
The result again shows how inconsistent Barcelona can be this season. What should have been a fantastic opportunity to step up to challenge Real Madrid for the league title saw a dismal response from the players. On Sunday evening Barcelona should have been up there on 72 points. Instead it feels like they’ve thrown away their last opportunity to take this season’s Spanish league title.
