Narrow win in BilbaoAugust 29, 2016
Sunday saw FC Barcelona at Athletic’s San Mamés stadium in Bilbao. Athletic are always a tough opposition and last night’s match proved to be no exception, with the hosts piling on the pressure throughout. Barcelona created plenty of chances and were unlucky to walk away with only a single goal. But all the same, Athletic also had some good chances and came close to equalising on a couple of occasions.
It looked like Barça had gone ahead seven minutes into the game after Ada Turan headed the ball into the net, only to see it ruled offside and Athletic had a great chance after Ter Stegen messed up in clearing the ball and creating a good chance for Beñat. In the end the only goal of the match was scored by Rakitic from an assist by Turan, just 21 minutes into the first half.
New boys Denis Suárez and Samuel Umtiti both had good chances, but ultimately were to remain frustrated. Messi and Suarez both had good opportunities on Basque goal, but all the same the score frustratingly remained stuck at 1-0 for Barcelona and in the end it was enough to secure three points. The match marks Luis Enrique’s 100th win as Barcelona’s coach.
0-1 Rakitic (min 21)
