Suarez claws back point for Barça against Betis

January 30, 2017

It was only a last minute goal by Luis Suarez that saved FC Barcelona from their third loss of the season when they went up against Betis on Sunday afternoon. Barcelona saw a goal disallowed although replays showed the ball was clearly over the line.

Disallowed goal or not, Barça were lacking something this weekend. Again and again Betis were on the counterattack although unable to do any damage. Neymar came close to putting the Catalans ahead towards the end of the first half but when the break came neither team had scored.

Barcelona started the second half looking more focused on the job in hand, but that didn’t stop Betis from continuing to push when they had the opportunity. The home side finally went ahead a quarter hour from the end only to see Aleix Vidal score for Barcelona immediately after. The goal was disallowed despite the ball being clearly crossing the line. Significantly, the Spanish League has resisted introducing goal line technology.

But just when it looked like Barcelona would suffer another loss Messi fed the ball to Luis Suarez who put the ball into the Betis net right on the 90 minute mark. Although the match saw Barcelona a long way from their best, it was a frustrating result.

1-0 Alegría Moreno (min 75)
1-1 Suárez (min 90)

The weekend’s results see Barcelona move up into second place in the table after Sevilla’s defeat at the hands of Espanyol. Both Barça and Sevilla are on 42 points, behind Real Madrid by 4 points. Madrid still have a game in hand, currently scheduled for 22nd February against Valencia.
