Suarez hat-trick sees Barça win league titleMay 16, 2016
A hat-trick from Luis Suarez saw Barcelona secure the three points needed to take the Spanish League title on Saturday afternoon. The result saw FC Barcelona head the table a single point ahead of Real Madrid and Suarez take the Pichichi as highest goal scorer ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
A couple of good attempts on the Granada goal by Pique and Messi were foiled within the first ten minutes. The first goal finally came in the 21st minute after Neymar fed Suarez the ball off a cross from Jordi Alba. Now ahead, Barcelona settled into the game having shaken off their nerves. And their patience paid off with less than ten minutes of the first half remaining after Suarez scored inside the area off an assist by Dani Alves.
Just before the hour mark Granada made a good attempt at the Barcelona goal but Rico’s shot was saved by Ter Stegen. Barcelona continued to press while the hosts made the most of any opportunity they had, but in the last 15 minutes started to slow down. All the same, the match was far from over and with five minutes remaining Neymar passed to Suarez for a hat-trick. Neymar could easily have scored himself.
The win resulted in Barcelona’s 24th league title and their sixth in eight years. Dominating for much of the season, the Catalans stumbled when it came to the clasico in April. After an defeated streak that lasted from the beginning of October, three straight losses in the league allowed both Madrid rivals to close in. Ultimately Atletico fell last weekend and so the head to head fight against Real Madrid went to the final match of the season.
