Things went disastrously wrong for Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night, when goalkeeper Iraizoz Moreno was sent off within minutes of the start for a foul on Luis Suarez.
The subsequent penalty, kicked by Leo Messi, was just the start of a total of six goals to for the Catalans in this first match of three against Athletic this month. Barcelona faces the Basque team again this Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, followed next week by the return leg at the Nou Camp.
Despite the one-man advantage and a heap of chances on the Athletic goal it wasn’t until the 30 minute mark that Neymar scored the second of the night and that’s how the score stood going into the break.
The start of the second half saw Turan come on in place of Messi, who was suffering from some discomfort in his leg. Messi’s absense didn’t stop Suarez though. He scored his first of the night within a couple of minutes of play recommencing assisted by Neymar, who also assisted Rakitic 15 minutes later to make it 4-0.
Despite the three points already assured didn’t stop Barcelona from going all out for the remainder of the match though. Seven minutes later it was Suarez’s turn again, assisted by Turan. And Suarez made it a hat-trick in the 81st minute when he headed in a cross from Busquets and with 18 goals in 18 matches, Suarez is currently the top scorer not only in Spain, but also in Europe.
