Third time lucky against AthleticAugust 24, 2015
Fortune favoured FC Barcelona on Sunday night as the third match in a row against Athletic Bilbao resulted in three points from their first match of the season. After the two legs of the Spanish Supercup ended in the first title for Athletic in 31 years following a 4-0 win over the Catalans in Bilbao and a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp, it turned out to be third time lucky for Barça and a moral boosting win to start the season.
Athletic went out of their way to ensure Barcelona had as little space to do any damage, particularly in the first half. Despite a couple of good chances, including a penalty kicked by Leo Messi, when the break came neither team had scored.
Both Dani Alves and Sergio Busquets picked up injuries from Aduriz and abandoned the game, but it was perhaps when Atheletic defender Balenziaga was also forced to retire from the match five minutes into the second half that the match swung in favour of Barcelona. Soon after Luis Suarez volleyed the ball into the net for the only goal of the match and a win for Barça.
