Victory over Las Palmas behind closed doors

October 2, 2017

Sunday saw Barcelona face Las Palmas behind closed doors after the club’s decision to postpone the match due to safety concerns was rejected by the Spanish league.

Coinciding with a referendum on Catalan independence, which was ruled illegal by the Spanish courts, tensions were running high throughout the region as police went in to forcibly stop voting. Given that the referendum was well publicised it is hard to understand why the match wasn’t scheduled for Saturday in the first place. The decision to go ahead in an empty stadium was taken just 25 minutes before kickoff, leaving thousands of ticket holders stranded outside Camp Nou. Naturally they were disappointed.

Busquets scored the opener soon after the break when the first half ended with neither side having scored. Messi scored two more for Barcelona in the last 20 minutes. You can read more about the match on BBC Sport or FC Barcelona’s website.

The result leaves Barcelona four points clear at the top of the table, with Atletico Madrid in second place.
