Villarreal claws back 2 goals to secure drawMarch 21, 2016
With Atletico Madrid’s defeat by Sporting Gijon on Saturday the pressure on the players for Sunday afternoon’s match against Villarreal must have been eased. The club is in fourth place in the league and while they trail third place Real Madrid by quite a margin, they were unlikely to be a walkover either.
The home side came close to scoring in the opening minute, but it wasn’t until 20 minutes in that Rakitic scored for Barça. The Croatian player found the ball after a Messi free kick and put it into the back of Villarreal’s net. 20 minutes later it was Neymar’s turn, this time from the penalty spot and so when the whistle signalled half time the Catalans led 2-0.
The second half didn’t go to plan though, with Bakambu scoring 11 minutes after the break off a rebound. A few minutes later and things went really pear-shaped for Barça when Mathieu knocked the ball into his own net. Although there was still time to secure those three points Barcelona was unable to score and the match ended on a draw.
0-1 Rakitic (min 19)
0-2 Neymar (min 40)
1-2 Bakambu (min 56)
2-2 Mathieu (min 62)
