Win against Sevilla sees Barcelona equal Madrid recordFebruary 29, 2016
After the European Supercup final that saw FC Barcelona snatch a 5-4 win from them in extra time and as the last team to beat Barça, Sevilla is a team to be respected. And let’s not forget either that Sevilla is also Barcelona’s opponent in this year’s Copa del Rey final. And so ahead of the Sunday night’s game at the Nou Camp Luis Enrique and his players all knew they needed to be careful.
Twenty minutes in Sevilla made their mark when Vitolo opened the scoring, assisted by Trémoulinas. However, ten minutes later Messi fired a free kick over the Sevilla wall and into the top corner of the net from more than 20 metres out. It was a beautiful goal.
After going into the break at 1-1, it took a matter of seconds in the second half before Messi teamed up with Suarez and Pique, who put the Catalans ahead. Although the Barça trident went all out for another goal, it wasn’t to happen but the result was enough to keep hold of three points. The result means Barcelona now equal Real Madrid’s 1989 record for games unbeaten across all competitions.
0-1 Vitolo (min 19)
1-1 Messi (min 30)
2-1 Piqué (min 46)
