Win against Sporting sees Barça open up La Liga leadFebruary 18, 2016
Lionel Messi last night became the first player ever to score more than 300 goals in the Spanish League in a win that saw Barcelona open their lead to six points at the head of the table. The match against Sporting Gijon had been postponed from December because of Barcelona’s participation in the Club World Cup.
Messi scored his 300th La Liga goal 24 minutes into the match, although Barça’s lead was not to last long. Almost immediately had play resumed when Carlos Castro scored the equaliser for Sporting. However, the home side was unable to keep the might of Barcelona at bay for much longer. Messi scored his 301st La Liga goal at the half hour mark for the Catalans to lead 2-1 going into the break.
Barça had the chance for another goal 15 minutes into the second half after Neymar was brought down in the area. However, the Sporting keeper put himself in front of the ball and Suarez failed to get on the score sheet – at least for now. Minutes later though he made it 3-1 after beating the Sporting defence to put the ball into the net. With a 3-1 lead Barcelona’s three points were assured.
