Barça demolishes Roma for place in last 16November 25, 2015
Barcelona secured their place in the last 16 of Champions League last night after a 6-1 win against Roma at the Nou Camp. After Barça’s spectacular win against Madrid on Saturday the squad went on with all guns blazing, seeing Suarez and Messi each score two and one each from Pique and Adriano. With Messi back in the squad the team is looking to be in top form!
The opener came at the quarter hour mark with Suarez doning nothing more that walk the ball into the net after Alves had done most of the hard work and Messi’s first goal, three minutes later, was set up by Suarez and Neymar at the end of a series. With Barcelona controlling the match and running rings around the Italian defence it looked clear that they were cruising to victory. But a couple of minutes before the break Suarez’s second goal of the night meant any remaining hopes for Roma to squeeze even a draw looked unlikely.
Barça’s next goal was scored by Gerard Pique 10 minutes into the second half, his delight impossible to hide. He was clearly the happiest man of the night. And just three minutes later Neymar and Suarez were involved in another move that saw Messi score his second of the night on the rebound after seeing his first shot deflected by the Roma keeper. Barcelona’s final goal of the night came 15 minutes before time when Neymar was brought down in the area. Although Messi generously allowed the Brazilian to take the penalty, Adriano put the ball into the net after Neymar’s shot was deflected. With Barcelona having scored six goals it must have been little consolation when Dzeko scored Roma’s only goal just before the final whistle.
The result guarantees Barça the top place in Group E and looking in a strong position to defend their title. Although Neymar failed to get on the score sheet, it was still instrumental in setting up a number of goals and with Messi back in the squad the trio is going to be feared wherever they play.
